Author Interview! Meet Jennifer Ellision.

NowandAgain-Blog-BannerI am thrilled to have an author on my blog today! Oh, and before you leave, I just want to remind you to stop at the bottom and enter the giveaway to win an Amazon gift card and a free copy of Jennifer’s book. Okay?

Recently, I’ve been hearing a lot about a certain author, Jennifer Ellision. She’s written several books and I’ve only just recently gotten Now and Again, a NA contemp, and I loved this book.

I liked a lot of things about this book, but those of you that know me, know that I am boy CRAZY and I love a good love interest that’s interesting and deep and hot. And Cole was that for me, and more.

Let’s meet Jennifer’s book first and then let’s talk to the master behind the words!

Now and Again

Unemployed. Broke. Maid of Honor.

All (unfortunately) words that describe Em Hayes.

Without any job leads in San Francisco, Em caves to her mother’s promise of free rent and returns home. Her best friend, Nikki, couldn’t be more thrilled. Em’s degree in Event Management is gathering dust, and what better way to put it to use than planning Nikki’s wedding?

There’s just one flaw in that plan: Cole Connors. The girls’ former roommate. And part of the reason Em hasn’t been back since college graduation.

Em’s never been able to forget Cole—or how close they were before she pushed him aside and ran for the hills. Cole’s never forgotten Em either— but in the past two years, she hasn’t given him much choice but to try.

And, according to Nikki, there’s no better pair to plan the wedding of her dreams.

Em’s usually good at squashing messy feelings, but being around Cole again brings them all rushing to the surface.

And this time, she’s not sure she wants to run.

Let’s meet Jennifer!!

Hi Jennifer. Thank you so much for stopping by today. I’m so thrilled to have you. Let’s start at the beginning. How and when did you start writing?

I’ve been writing since… I learned how to put words in order. The earliest thing I remember writing was a Nancy Drew-esque story starring my parents when I was probably eight years old, but I spent a lot of my adolescence writing fanfiction and was especially into it in high school. Today, I owe the fanfiction community a great deal of the credit for helping me cultivate my craft.

What caused you to want to write Em and Cole’s story?

I majored in Creative Writing in college and one of the pieces I wrote was centered around Em’s best friend, Nikki—her worries over her upcoming nuptials and what is said about her. My professor and classmates felt there was enough material for a novel. I agreed.

Em immediately seized center stage and it became her story. Cole presented himself as soon as I found myself in Em’s head and I couldn’t resist them. I wrote a very pivotal college scene between the two of them before any other part of the book and worked backwards, building the book around it. Even when I scrapped most of my original drafts, that scene stayed firmly put.

I agree. There’s definitely enough here for a story. I loved reading about Em and Cole. So, I have to ask because I have a very strong picture of Cole in my head, if Hollywood was casting your book as a movie, who would you pick to play Em and Cole?

Oh no, I am the literal worst at this. I don’t… know? More than appearance, what would matter most to me if Now and Again became a movie would be that the actors really get Em and Cole. Especially Em. That they understand her tendency towards coldness masks a vulnerability that she’s afraid to show and could portray that well.

But, so that I don’t leave you totally answerless, a friend told me she pictures this guy as Cole and I have zero objections.

Oh good lord. I don’t know who this is but I approve. I definitely pictured him like this. Please give Katie a high five.

You’ve written quite a few books. Do you have a favorite story or character from them?

This is a bit like trying to pick a favorite child, but currently it’s Princess Aleta from my Young Adult fantasy series, Threats of Sky and Sea. She’s so delightfully prickly and it’s just a joy to write her interactions with the other characters in the books.

Oh! I can not wait to read this next. I’ll have to add that to my to-be-read shelf. What are YOU reading right now?

I just finished binge-reading the Off-Campus series by Elle Kennedy (New Adult contemporary) and they are all just to-die-for sexy. I’m also reading Passenger by Alexandra Bracken, who is one of my favorite authors. It’s a Young Adult time travel novel and I’m loving it so far.

And now my to-be-read shelf has grown even longer. Thanks! I mean it. I can’t get enough. I’m always looking for die-for-sexy. Which leaves me wanting to ask you this…What can us fans hope for next? What is in the works for you?

Aside from audiobooks for Now and Again and Riot of Storm and Smoke coming out (soon!), my next release will definitely be the third and final novel in my Threats of Sky and Sea series, Fall of Thrones and Thorns. As I’m still in the drafting stage, I don’t have a release date yet, but I’m hoping to have it out before summer.

After that, I’ve got no shortage of ideas! Some are fantasy, some are paranormal… and let’s just say that Now and Again won’t be my only foray into the New Adult contemporary arena. ^_~

Oh good. Because though I’m sad to leave Cole and Em behind, I can not wait to see what comes from your brain next. I need more love interests like Cole. I’d love to keep you chatting all day, but frankly, I’d rather have you writing! Thanks so much for stopping by Jennifer. I can not wait to get your next book in my hands. Please come back and visit us again, okay?

New Year’s Resolutions 2016

There are a lot of things that I’d like to change, and thankfully 2016 gives me the ammunition to make rules for my like in 2016.

I sat down with myself and a nice big glass of wine this weekend, and fiinnnaallllyyyyyy wrote my 2016 New Year’s Resolutions. Here they are.

New Year’s Resolutions

  1. Talk to more cute boys. Speaks for itself.
  2. Read more books. I work at a library, so thankfully I am always around books. Last year I read 100 books. This year, my goal is 120.
  3. Write more. I meant to write the final installment of the Pulse series and release it in 2015, but it just did not happen. So this year, my goal is to finish it. AND start a new series. Any ideas? Let me know.
  4. Watch more television. I know, sounds weird, but I need a little unwinding.
  5. Hike more! This one may seem in direct violation of #4, but I live in Colorado and HELLO, we have some of the most beautiful places to hike in the world. I need to get out more. Maybe I’ll bring a book. 😉
  6. Blog more! I know. I say this every year. But I mean it!

Those are MY New Year’s Resolutions. What are yours?

Blog Tour: Identity Theft by Laura Lee and giveaway

I recently joined a blog tour from Pen and Muse Press and I’m super excited to talk about it today! I was drawn to this book when it was described as genre-defying.

Some of my favorite books are genre defying. Like Cara Vescio’s WASTED series. Even my own series PULSE, is genre-defying. It’s a new adult novel but it’s also a mystery with erotic elements and humor and a body count.

So when Pen & Muse advertised IDENTITY THEFT as a genre-defying book, sparkly glitter lights went off and I knew that I wanted to read it. I have my thoughts on it today just a little farther down the page. Oh, and don’t forget to enter the easy giveaway where you can win a free copy of the book!

But first, a little more about it!

Identity Theft

by Laura Lee

Book Genre: Contemporary fiction

Book release date: 02/08/15 by Elsewhere Press

Identity Theft on Goodreads

Identity Theft (short blurb):

When the rock star she idolized responded to her e-mail, Candi was thrilled. When he started to flirt with her, she thought all her dreams could come true. The fantasy takes over her entire life, but none of it is true. The man of her dreams is not a rock star at all, but a bored office worker whose internet game quickly spins out of control.

Identity Theft (long blurb):

Candi Tavris is on the verge of turning 30, she works in the packaging department of a company that is downsizing and she is hounded by calls from creditors who mispronounce her name. She wakes up every morning praying that the folks at Life Lock will perform their work in reverse and give her “identity” to someone else. Her younger sister, never a serious student, married a rich executive and lives in a mansion. Candi’s only solace is escaping into the music and image of the 80’s pop star Blast.

Ethan  Penn, a  22 year-old college dropout who smokes pot and lives in his mother’s  basement, works in the rock star’s office. (His desk sits under a framed gold record with a dead spider caught in the glass.)

His boss, whose real name is Ollie Thomas, is as socially awkward off stage as he is charismatic on stage. He is depressed about his pending divorce. His greatest fame is behind him, his biggest hit “Partly Cloudy Thursday (Blast With Me)” was a clichéd monstrosity written to please record executives. His rock n’ roll lifestyle mostly consists of finding ways to keep his laundry from stinking while on the road and trying to remain anonymous while buying Preparation-H.

Blast assigns the task of keeping up with his social networking to Ethan. Ethan starts to correspond with Candi through e-mail and chats in the guise of the rock star. The conversation soon becomes steamy. The game spirals out of control when Blast performs a concert in Candi’s hometown and Candi is mistaken first for a groupie and then for a delusional stalker.

Candi must try to prove (and retain) her sanity. Ethan must decide whether to risk jail by telling the truth. A terrified Ollie has to come to terms with his relationship with his Blast character and the consequences of his fame.

My Thoughts

Candi Tavris finds herself like many people, wondering how the hell she ended up living a life in debt and feeling miserable. One of her main joys in life is 80’s rock star Blast. It’s her biggest escape from reality and from the woes of life.

But rock star reality isn’t always glamorous. When he’s not prancing around stage and singing, Blast can relax as himself, Ollie. He’s not satisfied and he’s tired and to top it all off, he’s served divorce papers. Looking to get some distance between the media and his ever-watchful fans, Ollie gives in and decides not to run his social media accounts for the time being.

Enter Ethan. Ethan lives with his mother still in her basement. He’s given something incredible! A secret life. A username and password that makes him adored by masses…of course everyone thinks that he’s Blast. And our story comes full circle when Ethan decides to respond to one of Candi’s messages as Blast that he’s found in a fan forum. He knows what he’s doing is wrong but he can’t help it. It’s a new world, a new life that he’s been waiting for.

Of course Candi, looking for her own escape, gobbles up the message and believes that she is talking to the real Blast. And from there, she quickly evolves into living her life as the kind of woman that she hasn’t been for so long. Fascinating. Desirable. Brave. Risk-taking.

As we all know, dreams and magic don’t last forever…

Okay. I liked this book. Really liked it. And it’s true. It is genre defying. Because it’s not just some psychological thriller—though the pacing reads as such. And there’s romance too, though I wouldn’t exactly call this whole book a romance. I would say there’s plenty of romantic undertones. And gawd, this thing is dropping with snark and sarcasm, which I love. Looooovvveeeeee.

I have to say what I appreciated the most was the crazy build-up. Because it seems like all of the characters start at the bottom. Then we have this crazy build up and you know at some point its ALL going to come CRASHING down. And you wait. And you wait. And certain times you’re sure it’s going to happen. There’s this one scene where Candi goes to meet Blast. And the whole time it’s like watching this train wreck because you’re sure that it’s going to come to a head but at the last minute, Ethan is able to intervene. But GAWD THE SUSPENSE. The author sure knows how to play with emotions.

The pacing was great and there really weren’t any moments that I felt bored during reading.

I can’t quite put my finger on what it is, but the author has a really interesting writing style. It’s very dry and interesting. It’s not like a lot of other authors out there. After I read the author’s bio I saw that she’s written a gazillion non-fiction books for major publishers and I think maybe that has something to do with it. I liked her writing style a lot but I just couldn’t put my finger on what made it so unique. If you read it, you’ll have to let me know what you think.

Also, another thing I really loved in this book was the playful banter between Candi and (fake) Blast via instant messenger. Being someone who grew up talking to my crushes using AIM, I totally loved it. And you know what else it reminded me of? 50 Shades of Grey. Because the playful banter in 50 Shades is what made people love the couple so much.  And I would say that it’s true here. You’re sitting there, grinning like an idiot, reading this hilarious, sometimes awkward, sometimes sweet, private exchange and you know that you’re been there and these characters are totally exploring each other. Too bad it’s all a fraud! Hahaha.

Look, so I don’t want to spill the beans so to speak too badly, because I hate spoilers, but I have to say that THIS BOOK IS NOTHING THAT YOU WILL EXPECT. It is clever. Unique. Original. Interesting. Sexy. Funny. Mysterious. And a total page turner. If you want a fantastic read, you should pick this up. I would say that people who like mysteries, contemporary romances, thrillers, contemporary fiction, and even new adult works will like this book.

May Check-In

I can’t even handle my excitement at having Pulse: Deception, book #2 in the Pulse series, out into the world. So far, the reception has been pretty fantastic.

It’s always nerve-wracking to publish a book, especially something that you pour your heart and soul into. But it’s an even bigger relief when it’s published. You know that people can enjoy it as much as you enjoyed writing it.

It’s even crazier to think that I’m almost done telling Bryn’s story. There’s only one installment left of Pulse! Holy smokes!

In other news, RT Booklover’s Convention was this last week and I’m so jealous that I’m not there. I’m thinking that I’ll definitely be going next year. It’s in Vegas. Helllooooo Vegas! Have you gone to RT? I’d love to hear about your experiences.

Pulse: Deception is Here!

I can’t even believe how quickly time flies!

Did I mention that my second book, Pulse: Deception is out now! You can buy it! You can download it! You can read it! I can barely believe it.

As I’ve mentioned before, the fabulous Cara Vescio designed the cover and it was co-written (again) by my good friend Bette Colton.

Here are the deets!

Pulse: Deception

This unique, sexy, and thrilling novel series is perfect for fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout, Katie McGarry, and Jay Crownover.

Danger. Romance. Death.

Bryn Everly is inching closer to the answers she’s been seeking.

Who is the Cold Creek Killer? Was her father’s death really an accident or was it murder? Who is killing off her friends? Bryn dives headfirst into trying to solve the murders, forcing her to face a question she’d rather not ask herself: Is she the next target?

Murder isn’t the only thing on Bryn’s mind. She’s still captivated by sexy, boy-next-door Julian. But if she’s so enraptured with him, why does she find her mind sauntering back over to resident bad boy, Hudson? Shrouded in secrets, no one really knows what he’s up to.

Danger, romance, and emotions collide in this fast-paced and sexy installment #2 in the Pulse series.

PULSE is a new adult novella series from Arie James and Bette Colton, told in sexy and dangerous installments.

* Readers, please note that this is episode 2 of a 3 part episodic new adult series. Each part in the Pulse series reads like a television episode. It’s full of drama, intrigue, sex, and also a piece of the much larger story. Each episode ends on a cliffhanger which will be picked up immediately in the next book. Please be advised that due to mature subject matter as sex and swearing, this book may not be suitable for all readers.

With that said, you’ll be hearing a lot more from me this month. I’ve got some fabulous blog tours, cover reveals, and book news coming. In the meantime, check out PULSE!

The Blood Talisman Blog Tour (and giveaway!)

Today I’m tickled to have another fellow author on my site. It’s almost like I’m getting pretty good at this whole blogging thing!

So Kim Culpepper wrote an urban fantasy novel called The Blood Talisman and she’s taking the internet by storm to let people know about it. She was awesome enough to stop by and talk to me.

The Blood Talisman

by Kim Culpepper

Book Genre: Urban Fantasy

Book release date: 05/21/2014

 The Blood Talisman book blurb:

Alex Jacobs gets bitten by a werewolf, and that’s only the beginning of his problems. When his wife is kidnapped and turned into someone he doesn’t recognize anymore, he not only struggles with letting her go but, also with saving her life.

Selene is a powerful witch that not only teaches Alex the ways of the wolf but, also teaches him about restraint and purpose. Her shy innocence quickly attracts him to her and he struggles with being torn between two women. Their feelings for each other are constantly put to the test as a battle for the blood talisman, the key to immortality, is fought for power to some and a way to live forever for others. It is quickly learned that immortality comes at a price to all of humanity.

Meet Kim Culpepper

Where did the idea of The Blood Talisman come from?

The idea came from several disappointments in the reading of various urban fantasy type books. The whole vampire love story thing exploded and I always felt werewolves got the short end of the stick, so to speak. I wanted to have a main character that people could relate to and also add that supernatural element because I am a huge horror fan and I do write mostly horror.

How many more will there be?

I am currently working on an outline for the second novel and I plan to so far make it a trilogy.

I hear you run a book cover company. Tell us a little about that.

I do have a book cover business that I just started. I’m using pictures that I take. I love photography and I felt this was a great way to combine my love of taking pictures and reading books. I love using people I know in my pictures and finding unique places to photograph so I feel like I have the most unique book covers available. My company is Dark Child Creations and you can see some of the covers I have at

What’s your best writing tip or trick?

I feel like the more you write, the better you are at it. Also getting out there and meeting people that are doing the same things in your genre can be very useful for you in the future.

Who is your favorite character that you’ve written?

My favorite character would have to be Ram. He is the main villain throughout this first novel and I loved writing him because who doesn’t like a bad guy. I got the inspiration for him from Klaus on the TV show ‘The Originals’. I just love a bad guy that you love to hate.

Thank you so much Kim for your time!
